About Anesthesia
Anesthesiologists ensure the safety and comfort of patients before, during and after surgery. Their duties include pre-surgical patient evaluations, administration of anesthetic medication, monitoring vital signs and airway and management of post-operative recovery.
Anesthesiologists play a crucial role in pain management through various routes of drug administration such as general, regional and local anesthesia. They also help manage acute and chronic pain conditions.
In addition to their role in the OR, you can also find anesthesiologists in ICUs where they tend to critically ill patients. They deal with complex medical conditions, organ dysfunction and life-threatening emergencies in collaboration with other healthcare providers.
There are a total of 17 anesthesia residency programs accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada across Canada. This means that every University that has a medical program also has an Anesthesia residency program.
